1. Why do people read?
In my opinion, people read for two main reasons. Firstly, they read books for pleasure or relaxation.  A book can be a really powerful tool to soothe the mind after a long day of working or studying. Books are a form of escapism and when you read a really engrossing book your mind can transport you to a whole new world and allow you to forget all about the troubles in your own one. Secondly, some read to increase their knowledge and expand their horizons on topics like history, science or philosophy. Depending on the type of books that we choose to read, we will have different experiences.
•    escapism (noun): lối thoát khỏi sự nhàm chán, khó chịu
•    engrossing (adjective): rất thú v, đòi hỏi sự tập trung cao = very interesting
•    expand one’s horizons: mở rộng tầm mắt, mang đến trải nghiệm mới

2. How important do you think reading is?
Reading to me is like nutritious food for the brain. It really helps develop our brain and improves our knowledge of so many different areas. I think it’s important to foster a love for reading in young children as they are often more interested in the colors and actions of video games and movies. But  I think reading is a more rewarding form of entertainment, we have to use our own imaginations to create the scenes and the characters in our mind and I think you get to know the people in books better than characters in a movie as you often have access to their own private thoughts. It’s no surprise that many people feel they actually know the characters they read about when they are given access to their private thoughts and motivations. This is something you don’t usually get from films.
•    foster (verb): chăm chút, nuôi dưỡng

3. What kinds of things are popular to read these days?
I’ve noticed that self-help or self-improvement books always appear on the best-seller shelf. I think a lot of this has to do with modern society and how fast-paced and competitive it can be. People use these books to help them cope with the pressures of modern society and also to help them get ahead in life. Among younger people, fantasy and sci-fi books are always popular. I think this is because younger people love to imagine vastly different worlds with lots of different creatures and people.
•    self-improvement (noun): tự cải thiện bản thân
•    get ahead (phrasal verb): vươn lên, dẫn đầu

4. How do you think reading will be different in the future?
In the very near future, I think people will no longer buy real books to read. In replacement of books,  electrical devices such as Kindles will be used more widely and all of the books in various genres will be available online for users to download. I think Kindles are great as you can have hundreds of books with you at all times and it doesn’t weigh very much at all but I have to say that I don’t think they quite beat the feel and smell of a new book.
