While I take absolutely no pride in admitting this, I have to say that I am not an excessively active person. Most sports are mere hassles to me and I struggle to take the slightest delight in participating in any of them. However, there is a sport that manages to pull me out of the anti-sport mantra. It’s dancesport.

So how did I get into dancesport? I obviously did not do it on my own free will initially, only to fulfill a PE credit in my university. Along with some classmates, I studied the basics of 4 out of many different dancesport types, including Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Jive and Bachata, usually in the school gym or sometimes out in the schoolyard too.

Although I was acquainted with several people who were passionate dancesport lovers, the apathy I felt towards the sport persisted until the first lesson. Only when the lecturer, who was very lovely with remarkable talent if I might add, showed us the dance sequences for Rumba did I realize how absorbing dancesport could be.

Albeit I was only taught the very fundamental steps and routines, I still find dancesport incrediby charming due to three main reasons. The first advantage is obviously my health. As I mentioned earlier, I am not a sporty person and my stamina is average at best and embarrassing at worst.

Practicing different moves again and again in the course of 2 – 3 hours each day had been really physically demanding for me, which has improved my stamina immensely and at the same time, helped me burn a lot of calories and speed up my metabolism. Another noticeable feature is it helps me incorporate sports with music and creativity.

It not only allows me to learn about beats and how one can dance according to the beats of the songs playing, but also encourages me to improvise and choreograph some moves. And last but not least, dancesport nurtures my love for dancing in general, enlightening me with knowledge regarding body alignment, isolation and the importance of angles.

All in all, dancesport is a treasure I came across, which has sparked up in my life a new hobby, a new passion, and a new way to keep myself healthier. I would recommend it to anyone who may want to take up something new and worthwhile.

This, hence, erases somewhat the distance and hostility, and encourages people to focus more on the similarities, no matter how different our race, cultural backgrounds and opinions might be.
With the organization of international sport competitions such as the Olympics or World Cup, people have the chance to be closer physically, as they travel to the host countries to see the events, which allows them to find out more about one another’s culture too.
