In some countries, young people are living in a time of unprecedented wealth, safety and health, but they are often reported to be miserable. While this phenomenon might actually be the byproduct of modern life, there are possible solutions to help them deal with it.

Young people, such as young adults, feel unhappy in spite of their improved living standards for several reasons. One of these, for instance, is the pressure to succeed. These days, success is measured by various metrics, such as material wealth, academic achievement or career progression, all of which burden young people with goals and expectations. Therefore, even when they are by no means underachieving, the youth can hardly avoid feelings of inadequacy and failure. Meanwhile, the prevalence of social media compounds the situation by creating false comparisons. As users are bombarded with a highly-curated version of other people’s lives on social networking platforms, they are subject to envy and dissatisfaction. These feelings are harmful in that they sediment over time and may culminate in anxiety and depression. It could be said that the aforementioned issues are severe, and definite solutions are, therefore, imperative.

Fortunately, certain measures exist. The young deserve to be under less pressure to achieve; this could start at the home environment, where parents shelve their pursuit of academic excellence, and enroll their children in sporting activities instead of cram schools. If children grow up without the burden of undue expectations, they can enter adulthood free to find and pursue their true calling. Additionally, young people should curb social media usage, either by taking breaks from their devices or deactivating their accounts. This is to reduce the amount of time they could be bombarded with grossly inaccurate representations of others’ lives, so they would not feel miserable as a result. These measures are, on the whole, about creating an environment where success is measured in factors other than those that would cause distress.

In conclusion, this modern-day headache is not without its solutions. However, until young people are helped to live more fulfilled lives, it is likely that their unhappiness will persist, despite them being wealthier and safer than ever before.
