Many people are divided over the debate regarding quality of life for the elderly in the modern world. While some argue that growing old today is grim, others claim that the elderly live better than they used to in the past. I am inclined to agree with the latter view, even though the former merits some examination.
There are reasons to believe that old age in the modern world is dreadful. Admittedly, some of the elderly are neglected in society. A number of people send their geriatric parents to nursing homes instead of directly providing care for them, which is considered irresponsible and negligent at times. Furthermore, with the gradual breakdown of family structure in many developed societies, senior citizens may encounter more instances of disrespect from the youth. In past societies, seniors were looked upon as troves of experience and wisdom, but nowadays, astute observers are likely to notice that later generations exhibit less respect and more dismissiveness toward the elderly. I would concede that they are rightfully concerned in that regard.
Nevertheless, I firmly believe that modern life for the elderly is much better than it was in the past. This is owing to enhanced access to healthcare for them, which extends their lifespan. Consequently, they can enjoy their retirement and spend more time around their offspring. Additionally, many governments provide welfare and support facilities for the elderly, such as in Hanoi, Vietnam, where all senior citizens can take public transport free of charge. Schemes like this ensure that the elderly can afford goods and services after a lifetime of contributing to society. Because of these reasons, the sentiment of geriatrics being able to live better seems more convincing.
In conclusion, it is clear that there are two distinct outlooks on the quality of life for the elderly in the modern world, and I support the view on improvement. While becoming old is never easy, living standards for seniors have progressed compared to the past, giving them a safety net to embrace their age.
