As someone who’s quite satisfied with their current career path, I hardly ever pay other professions any mind. However, there’s one job that’s really impressed me lately, which belongs to the wedding fashion industry: bridal stylists.
Having heard of the profession for quite a long time, I’ve never had much knowledge about what the job entails until I watched a show called “Say yes to the dress: Lancashire”. The show basically follows different brides-to-be on their journey of finding the wedding gown of their dream and how a bridal stylist, whose name’s Gok, helps them achieve this. In summary, “Say yes to the dress” was a splendid show with lovely dresses and suits, heart-warming stories and interactions and most importantly, a quite holistic, albeit idealized at times, insight into the responsibilities of a bridal stylist.
So what are the duties of a bridal stylist? Usually, their main task is consulting with their clients to determine bridal gown preferences and expectations. Then, they will suggest specific wedding gown styles that compliment the clients’ body shapes, interests, wedding ceremony plans and financial situations. They are also in charge of accessorizing bridal gowns with decorative jewelry, veils, gloves, and headpieces. These tasks require a bridal stylist to have an eye for fashion and the ability to create bridal ensembles that are creative and in vogue. Moreover, a bridal stylist must also be a good listener to pick up on the clients’ personality traits and any feedback they may have on the gowns and accessories.
There are 2 reasons why I feel really intrigued by this career. Firstly, I have always been partial to wedding dresses and suits, and in the last few decades, there is much more diversity in terms of stylings and designs of these gowns, which really encourages me to be a part of the industry and work with all these beautiful garments. Second, I admire the patience and care that some bridal stylists show towards their clients, and how with their knowledge and expertise, they’re able to make these brides-to-be the happiest in their wedding.

1. What are the most popular jobs for young people in your country?
The answer may vary from person to person. Based on my observations, however, many youngsters opt for jobs in the banking and finance departments due to the decent salary and good job security they offer. Administrative assistants and sales representatives also remain sought-after by some fresh graduates. In recent years, though, with the development of the Internet and streaming services, many people are considering becoming streamers or content creators on social media platforms since these professions are highly dynamic.
2. What is the difference between high-income and low-income jobs in your country?
If we’re discussing, well, which jobs tend to be well-paid and which not, Vietnam is pretty much the same as most other countries in that manual physically-demanding jobs, such as construction workers or agricultural laborers, are generally lower-paying. On the other hand, technology and finance sectors’ workers tend to be very well-paid. I guess this is because these professions are incredibly profitable and require an expertise level that not many people in society could reach.
3. When is the right time for young people to start making serious plans for their future careers?
Hmmm, it is tough to pinpoint a specific age, since each of us grows at a different pace and there could be so many situational factors that play into rendering it possible or not for us to decide on a future career. However, I think highschool or college is usually a great time to start crafting these plans, because this is when people are more mature and can actually make more informed decisions, as well as become aware of not only their own potentials and responsibilities, but also the world around them and what is in demand. So roughly between the age of 15 to 20 is when a young person should make more concrete plans for their future careers.
