NÂNG CẤP TỪ VỰNG MÙA HALLOWEEN
Halloween đang around the corner (gần tới). Nhân dịp tháng "cô hồn phương Tây" này, mình sẽ bắt đầu series 3 phần học từ vựng thông qua các bài viết về lịch sử của Halloween. Bài đầu tiên chúng ta sẽ cùng học có tên là "Ancient Origins of Halloween" (Nguồn gốc cổ đại của Halloween).
Ancient Origins of Halloween
Halloween’s origins (1) date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago, mostly in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, (2) celebrated their new year on November 1.

This day marked the end of summer and the (3) harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often (4) associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the (5) boundary between the worlds of (6) the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.
Dịch: Ngày này đánh dấu sự kết thúc của mùa hè và mùa thu hoạch cũng như sự bắt đầu của mùa đông lạnh tăm tối, khoảng thời gian được kết nối với cái chết. Người Xen-tơ tin rằng vào đêm giao thừa, ranh giới giữa hai thế giới của người sống và người chết trở nên mờ đi. Vào đêm 31 tháng 10, họ ăn mừng lễ Samhain, người ta cho rằng lúc này linh hồn cõi chết quay lại thế gian.
In addition to causing trouble and damaging (7) crops, Celts thought that the (8) presence of the (9) otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic (10) priests, to make (11) predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the (12) volatile natural world, these (13) prophecies were an important source of comfort during the long, dark winter.
Dịch: Ngoài việc gây rắc rối và phá hoại mùa màn, người Xen-tơ còn cho rằng sự hiện diện của những linh hồn ngoại lai này còn giúp cho các Druids, những thầy tế lễ Xen-tơ, tiên đoán về tương lai. Đối với một dân tộc hoàn toàn dựa vào thế giới tự nhiên vạn biến, những lời tiên tri này là nguồn động viên an ủi quan trọng trong suốt mùa đông lạnh giá tối tăm.
To (14) commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred (15) bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as (16) sacrifices to the Celtic (17) deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically (18) consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes.
