I’d like to talk about Duong, a friend from my youth group at the church I’m attending, who moved to his new flat last month. He had lived with his family before moving into this new accommodation, and then he found it was time he should have some more privacy and learn to be more independent, so he decided to move out. To celebrate this event, he invited the whole group to a small house-warming party at this new place.

It is a fully-equipped 30 meter square studio apartment, a kind of apartment with only a single room but functioning as a living room, bedroom and kitchen at the same time. It looks a bit tiny but Duong said it was a good fit for a single like him. He found that it saved him a great deal of cleaning time as he didn’t need to move from one room to another. It is also more budget-friendly when it comes to decoration. All he needs to do is to pick a good color scheme so that everything can look cohesive, and then touch it with some ornaments.

I think moving out is a good move for Duong. It seems he has got more control of his life ever since. He became better at making decisions, budget management and organizing. He even got on better with his parents than when he still lived with them, because he felt more appreciative for what his parents had done for him, from the smallest things like a hot meal when he got home or clean clothes everyday. This is because now he’s got to do all of these by himself.

Câu trả lời mẫu Speaking Part 3: Describe someone you know who has recently moved to a new place

1. Is it positive for young people to live by themselves?
I think living alone in itself has a lot of benefits which is good for personal development, so it might be a good choice for young people too. But in order to make it to the fullest when living alone, a young adult should possess a good sense of discipline and be willing to embrace any difficulty that might spring up when living by themselves. Otherwise, living alone might bring about more challenges than enjoyment.

  • to the fullest (phrase) nhiều nhất có thể
  • a good sense of discipline (phrase) tính kỷ luật cao
  • embrace (v) chấp nhận
  • spring up (v) đột nhiên xuất hiện

2. Besides cooking, are there any other skills that people need to learn if they live on their own?
Of course there are, and most of them are management-related skills. They can range from self-management, budget-management to time management skills, to name just a few. Managerial skills are essential for people with solo living life because there would be hardly anyone to be by their side to attend to their personal needs on a daily basis. Thus, without developing a good self-disciplinary skill set, they might find independent living quite tricky.

  • solo living life (n) sống một mình
  • on a daily basis (n) hàng ngày
  • self-disciplinary (adj) mang tính kỉ luật cá nhân
  • tricky (adj) khó khăn

3. What kinds of people tend to live by themselves?
The first type of person coming to my mind for those who might be in favor of a solo living life is the introverted. These are those who tend to find more fulfillment when they have alone time. They might not detest socializing or sharing space with others, but more often than not they just need time to be on their own so they can be surrounded by enough quietness to unwind and recharge.

  • detest (v) ghét
  • unwind (v) thư giãn
  • recharge (v) hồi phục
