A time when I got lost in a supermarket has been engraved in my memory. My parents took me to Hanoi for the first time that summer vacation and I was only 7. I used to live on the outskirts of Hanoi, and of course, I couldn’t visualize the hustle and bustle of city life, so I was overwhelmed at first.

I visited many places like Hoan Kiem Lake, One Pillar Pagoda and Ho Chi Minh mausoleum. But what really impressed me was the five-star supermarket. I was bitten by a bug when I saw a huge supermarket full of products on shelves. We went there at the weekend so the supermarket was packed. I carefully strolled beside my parents; we passed many stalls until we reached the toy one.

I was so engrossed in watching many beautiful dolls and puzzles that I didn’t realize that I lost track of my parents. I started to panic and felt a wave of anxiety wash over me. After trying in vain to wander around to find my parents, I started crying.

Some adults noticed, they even gave me some candies so that I could chill out. Then they asked whether I could remember my parents’ names and phone numbers. Luckily, my dad had taught me thousands of times before, so I could remember his number and read it out loud. A kind lady quickly called, and my dad picked up the phone immediately. The lady described the surroundings so that my parents could locate me. I was so relieved to be reunited with them and grateful for the kindness of the strangers who had helped me. This experience taught me the importance of being aware of my surroundings and always staying close to my family when exploring.

Câu trả lời mẫu Speaking Part 3: Describe an occasion when you got lost:

1. How do people react when they get lost?
Individuals with different personalities have various reactions when they deal with the situation. For example, someone who is confident and independent may be more likely to keep a cool head and try to find their way back, while someone who is more timid may become overwhelmed and start to panic. Plus, the context and situation also can be important factors.

A person appears to be able to keep calm when they lose their sense of direction in a familiar place rather than in a strange one.

  • Keep a cool head (idiom): bình tĩnh
  • Timid (adj): nhút nhát
  • Factor (noun): yếu tố
  • Lose someone’s sense of direction: mất phương hướng

2. Why do some people have a good sense of direction?
I can think of two main reasons why some people are good at orienting direction. First, these people are experienced. They become skilled navigators after living in a certain place for a long time, or just having a chance to visit the same places frequently. The second reason is that some people have better cognitive mapping than others. They can use landmarks and other visual cues to orient themselves.

  • Skilled (adj): lão luyện
  • Navigator (noun): hoa tiêu
  • Cognitive (adj): trong tiềm thức/nhận thức
  • Mapping (noun): khả năng định hướng
  • visual (adj): liên quan đến thị giác
  • Cue (noun): tín hiệu

3. Is a paper map still necessary?
Yes, it is. Although printed maps are somehow underestimated, they are still essential in the modern world. These printed versions can be used without Internet connection, so they are applicable to different geographical features, especially remotes and mountainous areas. More importantly, paper maps are more cost-effective and don’t require any additional fees or subscriptions.

  • Printed map (noun): bản đồ được in sẵn
  • Underestimate (verb): bị xem thường/coi thường
  • Applicable (adj): áp dụng
  • Geographical feature: tính chất địa lý
  • Cost-effective (adj): hiệu quả về tiền
  • Subscription (noun): đăng ký
