In spite of là gì? Theo từ điển Oxford, In spite of có phiên âm là /ɪn spaɪt əv/. Đây là một cụm liên từ trong tiếng Anh chỉ sự nhượng bộ, thể hiện sự tương phản giữa 2 vế của mệnh đề ‘‘tuy - nhưng”, mang nghĩa là “mặc dù, cho dù”. Cụ thể như sau:

Lưu ý:

•    Sau In spite of chỉ có thể đi cùng với danh từ, cụm danh từ, hoặc các thành tố ngữ pháp tương đương, nhưng không thể sử dụng trực tiếp với một mệnh đề.
•    Nếu muốn sau In spite of là một mệnh đề thì cần thêm cụm “the fact that” để thành lập một mệnh đề trạng ngữ.

•    In spite of receiving mixed reviews, the movie became a box office success. (Mặc dù nhận về nhiều đánh giá trái chiều nhưng bộ phim lại có doanh thu phòng vé cao.) ➡ ĐÚNG

Although/ Though/ Even though cũng có nghĩa là “mặc dù, cho dù” giống như cấu trúc In spite of, tuy nhiên cấu trúc sau Although/ Though/ Even though có thể sử dụng trực tiếp với một mệnh đề. Cụ thể như sau:

IV. Cách chuyển đổi giữa cấu trúc Although sang In spite of

Although + S + pronouns + be + adj	Đổi tính từ thành dạng danh từ và lược bỏ động từ to be: Although + pronouns + be + adj ➡ In spite of + N	Although she was nervous, she delivered a flawless performance on stage. ➡ In spite of her nervousness, she delivered a flawless performance on stage. (Cho dù lo lắng, cô vẫn thể hiện một màn trình diễn hoàn hảo trên sân khấu.) Although he was tired, he went to the party. ➡ In spite of his tiredness, he went to the party. Khi chủ ngữ của 2 mệnh đề trong câu giống nhau	Bỏ chủ ngữ và chuyển động từ thành dạng V-ing: Although + S + V ➡ In spite of + V-ing	Although they faced criticism, they remained confident in their work. ➡ In spite of facing criticism, they remained confident in their work.
